Probable Cause

THE DTSB

The DTSB determines the Probable Cause of this accident to be pilot error in that there was a loss of thrust after takeoff from runway 30, and the pilot attempt to turn left and return to the field. (ROTOT) The canard wing on this aircraft is such that it lowers the nose aerodynamically during low speed environment and the plane flew into the ocean left wing low but not stalled.

NTSB

None yet (final report not yet published).

Recommendation

THE DTSB

The DTSB recommends that all pilot of all aircraft be sufficiently conditioned for ROTOT and commit to landing wings level straight ahead. In this case a wings level landing in the ocean would have likely flipped the plane over, but it would have most likely been survivable. The DTSB also recommends that night takeoffs over open water be avoided by using ADM and proper planning to avoid such precarious scenarios.
